Small Business Saturday

Charlie Dewhirst, Member of Parliament for Bridlington and The Wolds, is urging local people to support their local businesses this Small Business Saturday, on Saturday 7th December. Small Business Saturday is a campaign to celebrate small business success, encourage people to ‘shop local’ and to support businesses in their communities.

Local businesses across Bridlington and The Wolds need the support of their neighbours now more than ever following the introduction of the Labour Government’s National Insurance tax, Charlie Dewhirst MP has warned. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that the increase in National Insurance will cost businesses an additional £800 per employee, which has resulted in fears for job security and the future of the small businesses in East Yorkshire and across the country.

The Labour Government reduced the employer National Insurance threshold at the Budget by £4,100 and increased the rate of employer National Insurance contributions by 1.2 per cent to 15 per cent. The number of businesses closing in the week after Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Budget increased by 64 per cent, compared to the previous year.

Charlie Dewhirst MP is urging local people to take another look at our local high streets and beyond this weekend, to shop small and help give local businesses a boost in the run up to Christmas. He commented:

”Small businesses and family firms across Bridlington and The Wolds make up the lifeblood of the economy here.

The Labour Government has put all of that under threat with their betrayal of business which is damaging the economy and harming working people. At this time of year, small businesses should be looking forward to the festive shopping period, but many are fearing for the future of their firms and their livelihoods because of the Jobs Tax.

We have many fantastic businesses here and it is why I hope as many people as possible can support Small Business Saturday, get out to your local high street and see what they offer. Meanwhile, I will do all I can to be an effective opposition and to stop Labour’s National Insurance Jobs Tax.”
